I love Post

The Exos has already arrived, I had only placed the in the afternoon, and it came the very next morning. I ordered from http://www.tekheads.co.uk choosing the lowest option of £8 and it was delivered by http://www.city-link.co.uk so credit to both for doing a good job.

The exos is a quality built product, and seeing for real as given me great confidence that it will work first time with no problems, whether thats me being naive will have to wait to be seen.

Ive taken some images of it here:

Diving into the depths of Water-Cooling

I have recently applied for a new job, and im glad to say that I was offered the position. As a treat I thought its about time I built myself a new PC 😀

When I first built a quiet PC, I had to hunt for parts which were not directly made for the PC, but things have changed, and now there are many products available to reduce noise. Water-cooling kits are a part of this change, once very much a DIY job, there are now quality kits ready to go.

I often thought about switching to water-cooling, but concerns over a leak mixing with electricity has always put me off. But now that products have been tried and tested, and have decided to put my fears aside and give it ago, mainly because quiet air coolers would struggle with the heat produced by the latest hardware.

After looking through many water cooling kits, reading hundreds of reviews, I very nearly got a zalman reserator, but in the end I decided to go with the www.koolance.com exos-al. Its a seperate unit that sits ontop of your PC.

Althought it has fans, its supposed to be very quiet, but it can be very hard trying to gauge from dba readings unless you get yourself a meter and compare what current PC makes.

Im still going through the rest of my PC specs, with so much quality choice now im finding it hard to choose. But will post more as I go along, and plan to take plenty of images 🙂

Christmas Spirit

I dont post new here that often, I usually see it as time wasted that I could be doing something else 🙂

But since we are coming up to Christmas, I decided to make my theme xhtml 1.1 compliant, then add the fun but completely useless ability to expand and contract all the menus by clicking on their titles.

To finally top it off, I thought I would have my first go at taking part in the ye old tradition of defacing your website with christmas crap.

Code Overhaul

With the release of HL2, I have decided to go through the code of all my previous plugins, updating, fixing, and improving where possible.

This will mean that the new versions released should all comply with the latest e107 standards, and resolve any issues people have been experiencing.

Its a long and boring process but its just something that needs to be done, so if you are running any older versions, be sure to check for updates 🙂

Site Reloaded

For ages the site has always taking a backseat to coding projects, but there comes a point where things need to change.

So ive made up a new greycube theme, and ive even made up a flash banner to go with it, although my actionscript is a bit rusty so I shall be hopefully 'tweaking' it when I get a bit more time.

Now that the site is running on the latest e107 it means that theres more options available, such as registered members having the option of being emailed when someone replies to their forum post.

As for myself, im fine, work has been busy and combined with sickness spreading around, it takes a knock on your energy levels.

But on the bright side theres lots of cool news games out, ive been managing to finish off some more plugins for people, and with a bit of luck there will be more to come 🙂

Site Backup

Unfortunatly my sql database was corrupted after the webserver I was hosted on had some hardware failure. Luckily though I had done a backup, although not as recent as I would like, but after merging what was left of the corrupted sql over the backup, its not too bad, and anything else will just have to be reposted.

The new master of compression

In a display of how rapidly technology moves, my post about cabs has been made obsolete.

Bring forth 7-zip (.7z), and while at first appearance it may sound like a zip ripoff, it is infact worthy of being linked with the most popular compression in the world as it could be set to replace it.

Beating both .rar and .cab in compression while being just as fast, the code being opensource, means that its constantly being improved, works across all platforms, and is quickly rising in popularity.

To start using 7-zip, I recommend you get www.PowerArchiver.com version 9 which has .7z enabled on the right click options by default. For the purist theres the 7-zip only client at the official website www.7zip.org and for those who need to make installers there is Inno ( http://www.jrsoftware.org/isinfo.php ) which is used by Mozilla Firefox.

So uninstall winrar, forget cabs, because all you need is zip for speed, and 7-zip for small sizes 🙂

Priority FTP

If you want to leave large downloads uploading, and still use the computer for other things, such as playing offline games or ripping music, you can find your upload speeds crawl along because the FTP client is being slowed by other software.

To stop this happening, you can set your FTP client to have priority over the game or other software.

– Goto the Task Manager, then the Processes tab.
– Find your FTP process, for my fav FTP client Filezilla its Filezilla.exe
– Right click, and choose Set Priority
– Change to 'High'

You will need to repeat everytime you startup your FTP client, but its still handy as you can make the most of your PC without loss of speed.

Vacation

Just got back from Ibiza, had a great time out there 🙂

It was tempting to using a PC while out there, since everywhere seems to have set up internet access, and im talking off-licenses, gyms, restaurants, and even the laundretts. But I wanted to forget computers for a week.

Theres nothing like coming back to lots of spam. I will be going through forum and e-mails shortly for those who have been wondering about the un-usual lack of response.
